Hello! We’re The Gateway, the official campus media source at the University of Alberta. We publish a magazine once per month during the school year, and post articles to gtwy.ca every day during the school year. We were founded in 1910 and like making new friends.

Meeting Times

During the school year we hold weekly section meetings at our offices in the Students’ Union Building room 3-04 at these times:

News: Monday 3PM

Arts: Tuesday 3PM

Opinion: Tuesday 2PM

Photo/Multimedia: Wednesday 3PM

You’ll make awesome friends, and have the opportunity to travel across the country for conferences. If you’re interested in pursuing journalism as a career, it’s a great way to get your feet wet. Even if you don’t want to be a journalist, you’ll have a rad time strengthening your writing, videography, photography and/or drawing skills. Like free pizza and beer? We’ve got tons of it!

Glad you asked. First, decide which section(s) you want to volunteer for. Then, mosey on up to the section’s meeting in the Gateway office (3-04 SUB) and grab an assignment! Can’t make the meeting time? No sweat. Shoot the section editor an email and they’ll be happy to hook you up with luscious assignments via the Internet. To find more information about our nine sections, meeting times and editor contact information see below!

Ok! What now?

Well, first you need to choose a section. Don’t worry, you can volunteer for more than one. Here is a list of all of them with a description of each.

Cover everything from hot campus events to Students’ Union elections. Volunteer for news to be the campus’ voice on all things U of A.

Section Editor: Sofia Osborne news@gateway.ualberta.ca

Explore a big question or idea with a larger piece. Features are a fun way to challenge yourself beyond the standard article length and take more creative liberties with your writing. They also go in our magazine, and look really cool. If interested, contact the section editor.

Section Editor: Raylene Lung managing@gateway.ualberta.ca

Shoot, star in, or edit videos. Record podcasts. Produce or appear on our CJSR radio segment, Gateway Presents. Multimedia volunteers have loads of choices!

Section Editor: Oumar Salifou multimedia@gateway.ualberta.ca

Sound off on what’s happening on campus, in the city and beyond. Opinion volunteers are crucial for stirring up a little controversy or lending a cool perspective on current events.

Section Editor: Emma Jones opinion@gateway.ualberta.ca

Arts & Culture

If you’ve got a flair for music, theatre, DIYs, food or fashion, check out A&C. You can talk to famous people, and will probably be able to snag some free albums and movie passes too.

Section Editor: Victoria Chiu  arts@gateway.ualberta.ca

Report and comment on the world of sports, both on and off campus. Don’t sweat it if you don’t know the difference between a quarterback and a three-pointer: you can write about health and wellness topics too.

Section Editor: Oumar Salifou online@gateway.ualberta.ca

Calling all shutterbugs! Snap pics for our stories and see your work proudly displayed in print and online.

Section Editor: Josh Storie photo@gateway.ualberta.ca

Start your own comic series or try your hand at creating neat illustrated graphics to beautify our stories. Along with photo, you’ll be making The Gateway visually delicious.

Section Editor: Alex Patterson production@gateway.ualberta.ca
